Students research obesity

28/05/2008
The 20 School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure students carried out face-to-face interviews with men in ten designated obesity “hotspots” within the Walsall Borough.

The areas were identified through Walsall’s Healthy Lifestyle Survey 2005 which indicated the areas of highest overweight and obesity levels.

The Obesity Consultation project has been developed by Walsall Council's Creative Development Team in partnership with NHS Walsall Community Health. The aim is to inform local weight management service delivery in the Walsall area.

Jamie Scott, PhD Candidate in Exercise Psychology, said: “Thesport department at the University was approached by Walsall Council's Creative Development team to undertake this piece of research. It provides a tremendous opportunity for the University to develop multi-agency links and for the participating students to gain valuable experience of working in the health promotion sector.”

The students are studying BSc (Hons) degrees in Physical Activity, Exercise and Health, and Sport and Exercise Science. They received training prior to the consultation day from Jane DeVille Almond, Director of the National Obesity Forum and Vice President of the Men’s Health Forum. They then went into the community on May 23 and 24 to ask questions in the 10 obesity 'hotspots'. The results will now be analysed by experts.
