27/06/2008

The Black Country Further Mathematics Centre, based in the University’s School of Computing and Information Technology, is hosting a Year 10 Mathematics Masterclass for gifted and talented youngsters on Wednesday, July 2 2008. There will also be an Induction Day for potential A-level Maths and Further Maths Year 11 students on Wednesday, July 9, 2008.

Pupils at the Masterclass will be encouraged to discuss questions they may never have thought about before, such as how playing games can help them understand aspects of biology, and they will also learn how to master Peg Solitaire.

The Induction Day, which is designed for students wishing to take Mathematics beyond GCSE level, will further pupils mathematical insight with a day of quizzes, talks and activities. Past A-level students will be student ambassadors.

Organiser and Senior Lecturer Liz Price, of the School of Computing and Information Technology, said: “The events will help pupils develop their potential and see different sides of mathematics, including how it relates to every day life.”

More than 100 visitors are expected to attend the two days at the University’s City Campus in Wolverhampton.

Schools taking part will include Highfields, Smestow, Willenhall, Droitwich Spa, Oldbury College, Shire Oak, Our Lady and St Chads, Wednesfield, Wolverhampton Girls, Dormston, Holly Hall, Streetly, Great Wyrley, Grove, Sundorne, William Brookes, Queen Mary’s, Edgecliff and Darlaston College.
