Designs to be featured at Wedgwood Museum

17/06/2008

A competition was launched to find a selection of work to be included in the exhibition to celebrate the opening of the flagship new Wedgwood Museum in Stoke on Trent in October.

The competition, run in conjunction with the Wedgwood Museum Trust, was open to all Design and Applied Arts students at the University working in materials including ceramic, glass and textiles. The theme was jewellery and body adornment and students were asked to design an artefact or collection which reflects Wedgwood’s designs, ideas and processes.

Senior Lecturer, Vicky Shaw, said: “We are looking for students who have shown a creative and inspirational journey through ideas and processes using Wedgwood as the starting point for innovative and exciting concepts for jewellery and body adornment.”

Museum Trust Director, Gaye Blake Roberts, said: "The work from students has been inspirational and outstanding. They have taken the brief to such high levels and interpreted it in so many different ways. The effort of teaching staff is also evident. This is a partnership that will run and run and the students' outlook keeps Wedgwood relevant."

Initial judging took place at the School of Art & Design and the panel included Gaye Blake Roberts, Director of the Wedgwood Museum Trust, and Nigel Spicer and Sharon Gater, of the Museum’s education team. Andrew Logan, Artist/Sculptor, jewellery designer and innovator of the ‘Alternative Miss World’, will also visit later this month to judge and the winner will be announced after his visit.

Selected pieces will also be chosen to form part of the Wedgwood permanent collection.
