The Walsall Sports Centre is a Judo Centre of Excellence and hosted members of the GB team this week as they put the finishing touches to their preparation for the Games.

Among the competitors was gold medal contender Craig Fallon, who was a University of Wolverhampton Associate student and used to live at the Walsall campus Student Village.

University Director of Sport and former international judo star Mike Chamberlain added: “We were delighted to be able to offer our excellent facilities to the GB team and wish them all the best for the Beijing Games.”

Members of the team were based at the Walsall Campus for three days this week and collected their Olympic GB team kits in Birmingham during their stay.

Walsall Sports Centre was part-funded by a £2 million Lottery Grant which helped create a permanent matted judo area. The Gorway Road site is also used as a sports and fitness venue for the wider community and was named as one of the official training bases for the 2012 London Olympics.
