Opportunity for writing course in Wolverhampton for underrepresented writers

Students and staff members from the University can sign up for this course focusing on underrepresented writers. If you would like to attend this course, please read further information below as you may be eligible to attend the course for free! 

This inclusive course focuses on developing writers who are currently underrepresented. This includes a range of personal characteristics provided by Creative Future such as; those who face barriers due to mental health issues, physical health/disability, sensory impairment, learning disabilities, neurodivergence, substance misuse, survivors, working-class backgrounds, the LGBTQIA+ community, and/or from Black, Asian, traveller, mixed heritage or other global majority backgrounds.

In this short workshop series, learners will look at how poets explore, celebrate and commune with the body in their writing. Using guided exercises and free writing time, learners will look at how poetic language connects with the body. In between sessions, there will be a chance to work on your poetry and the option to share it with the group if you are happy to. 

Dates: Saturdays – November 4, 18 & December 2, 2023.

Times: 2 pm – 4 pm

Cost: £7.50 for the full course (£2.50 per session)

About the course facilitator

Sallyanne Rock is a queer, neurodivergent poet and freelance writer from the Black Country. She writes about domestic abuse, queer identity and religious trauma. Her poetry has been published widely in various journals and anthologies, and she has appeared at spoken word events across the West Midlands. She works as a mentor, workshop facilitator and poet for hire, and has worked alongside organisations such as Writing West Midlands, Verve Poetry Festival and Creative Future. In 2019, she was awarded the gold prize for poetry in the Creative Future Writers’ Awards. Sallyanne’s debut pamphlet, ‘Salt & Metal’, is published with Fawn Press.
