Black History Month event: Bad news from home

As a part of Black History Month 2022, The Chaplaincy is hosting an event, Bad News from Home. Pastoral and spiritual care responses for international students and staff receiving traumatic news, with Reverend Dr Paul Nzacahayo.

WHERE: The Chaplaincy and online

WHEN: Wednesday 26 October, 4pm - 6pm

  • 4pm - 5pm: Lived streamed conversation with an in-person audience at the Chaplaincy Molineux Street
  • 5pm - 6pm: In person only informal conversation and refreshments

In 1994 Dr Nzacahayo was studying in Scotland when the news of violence in his home country of Rwanda broke.  At the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Paul preached a sermon at Cranmer Methodist Church, close to campus, about the experience of being far from home at such a momentous time for his nation. These reflections helped our Lead Chaplain, Reverend Sarah Schofield, critique her own practice, so she is delighted his lived experience, and academic pastoral expertise can be shared with a wider audience. Over the years, students and staff have had to watch horrendous events unfold at a distance. Paul's practical analysis may help those experiencing such distress and those who wish to support them. Contributions from attendees will be welcome, and staff will be on hand to provide pastoral support if needed.

Reverend Dr Paul Nzacahayo, is an expert in cross-cultural Christian ministerial practice. He is a Methodist Tutor at the Queen's Foundation in Birmingham and Minister at Cranmer, the closest Methodist Church to the Wolverhampton campus.
