International event focused on Remains of the Day author

An international conference focused on the works of Nobel Prize-winning writer Kazuo Ishiguro is being held at the University of Wolverhampton.
The Twenty-First Century Perspectives on Kazuo Ishiguro conference will take place in the Chancellor’s Hall in Wolverhampton on Friday, 31 January and Saturday, 1 February 2020.
More than 70 delegates from all over the world will attend the event, organised by the University’s Centre for Transnational and Transcultural Research (CTTR).
Ishiguro is known for Never Let Me Go and his Booker Prize winning novel The Remains of the Day. The Anglo-Japanese writer has been a distinct literary voice since his 1982 debut A Pale View of Hills.
Organiser Professor Sebastian Groes, who has written two books on Ishiguro’s work, said: “We have been overwhelmed with the international and interdisciplinary response to the Twenty-First Century Perspectives on Kazuo Ishiguro conference and are honoured to entertain such an exciting range of voices on Kazuo Ishiguro. We are also delighted to have Professor Cynthia Wong of the University of Colorado Denver (USA) as our keynote speaker. We are looking forward to a rich and eventful day in Ishiguro studies.”
The conference takes place during the Wolverhampton Literature Festival and the University’s CTTR is working with the Festival to organise two other events. On Friday, 31 January 2020 between 5.15pm and 6.15pm, the “Kazuo Ishiguro: Perspectives from Japan” will take place in the Contemporary Gallery in the Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Speakers including Motoko Sugano, Shinya Morikawa and Yoshiki Tajiri will give their culturally specific perspective on one of the finest and most loved writers of our time.
Then on Sunday 2 February, Groes and his PhD students will organise a second Never Let Me Go workshop in the Contemporary gallery, from 12pm until 1.30pm.
Scholars with a keen interest in Ishiguro will travel from Germany, Italy, India, the US, Romania, Turkey for the event. The conference has received funding from Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation and the Japan Foundation to fund a group of seven Japanese scholars to contribute to the event.
The University of Wolverhampton is collaborating with the University of Bamberg (Germany); the City University of New York (USA); the Lucian Blaga University (Romania); and the University of Nottingham and Lincoln.
