This innovative, hands-on sport and exercise therapy course is accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists. The course involves the prevention of injury and rehabilitation back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports-specific fitness for a wide range of patients, and uses the principles of sport and exercise sciences, and the study of health, injury, and disease, to prepare patients for training, competition, or work.

The course is endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMPSA), ensuring that you meet the requirements of potential employers. Course content aligns with the employer-set professional standards of a gym instructor, and will equip you with all the skills and competencies you'll need to stand out from the crowd.

What happens on the course?

Our BSc (Hons) Sports and Exercise Therapy programme offers an in-depth exploration of sports and exercise therapy. This course is designed to provide you with a solid foundation of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and clinical experience needed to excel in the realm of sports injury management, rehabilitation, and athletic performance enhancement.

Throughout the programme, you will develop a comprehensive understanding of human anatomy, biomechanics, injury assessment, exercise physiology, and therapeutic techniques. You will learn how to evaluate and manage sports-related injuries, design and implement tailored exercise programmes, and support individuals in achieving their performance goals. 

You will also develop the skills required to provide the immediate care of injuries and basic life support in recreational, training and competitive environments, alongside learning how to assess and treat musculoskeletal injuries, and, where appropriate, refer on for specialist advice and intervention. Working as part of a professional team in a real-world environment, you will gain applied practical skills in sports and remedial massage, and plan and implement appropriate rehabilitation programmes.

Collaborate with industry professionals

You will have opportunities to work with some of our key partners such as British Judo, Wolverhampton Wanderers FC and Walsall FC, to develop industry skills relevant to a career in sport and exercise therapy.

Placement and employability modules allow you to gain hands-on experience in an applied context, including a clinical placement at Level 6. Employability modules enable you to explore sport and exercise therapy career pathways and engage in career development planning that prepares you for graduate-level employment in a competitive industry.

Additional Course Costs

Mandatory Costs

  • The University will fund an initial enhanced DBS check (where your course requires) GOV.UK / Disclosure and Barring Service. Some placement settings will require a refreshed certificate every 12 months. You are therefore encouraged to register for the Update Service within 30 days of the certificate being issued. This costs £13 per year and you can pay by debit or credit card.
  • Uniform is provided for this course, however the University of Wolverhampton reserves the right to make a charge.
  • You will be required to provide appropriate foot wear at a cost of approximately £50-£60

  • Various Sporting professional body memberships *prices will vary depending on body.
  • Various industry standard courses are available via the School of Sport's Earn and Learn employability initiative. You may be asked to contribute £0 - £200 toward these.

Typical entry requirement: 96 UCAS points

  • A Levels - grades CCC  (at least one A Level should normally be in a Science subject (e.g. Applied Science; Biology; Human Biology; Physics; Chemistry; Environmental Science, Psychology, Health and Social Care or PE)
  • BTEC L3 Extended Diploma or OCR Cambridge L3 Technical Extended Diploma - grades MMM in a Sport and/or Science subject
  • BTEC L3 Diploma - grades DD in a Sport and/or Science subject
  • Access to HE Diploma (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3 (96 UCAS point equivalence, minimum 45 credits at merit)
  • 1st4sport Level 3 Diploma in Sport and Physical Activities or 1st4sport Level 3 Diploma in Sports Performance and Excellence - grade Distinction

There will be no cost for the DBS this is free to applicants who have secured an offer and have chosen to study at the University of Wolverhampton.
