Quantity surveyors operate in all sectors of the construction industry around the world and are mainly responsible for the cost, legal and management delivery on construction and infrastructure projects. Quantity Surveyors work on projects that can range from buildings and infrastructure to residential developments, commercial projects to roads, airports and bridges. Projects can range from small schemes to multi-million pound projects. The range is diverse, and consequently no two days are the same.

This professionally accredited course, by both RICS and CIOB, will teach you how to blend traditional QS skills with modern technologies whilst ensuring you gain the knowledge necessary to become a construction professional in this rewarding discipline.


The course is offered as a three year full time, four year with industrial placement or five years for those already in employment.

Measurement, site surveying and costing techniques

Key employability and academic skills and RICS/CIOB professional development

Construction legal procedures


You will move to study:


Construction and environment technology

Construction costing and procurement

Use of IT skills for data management including BIM both for Civil and building

Project Administration practices and procedures

Continuing development of employability skills e.g. client communication/ verbal/written/presentation


Finally you will study:


Contract Administration and dispute resolution

Commercial project management e.g. risk management/ financial control and reporting

Sustainability including building excellence key themes e.g. collaboration/ soft landings/ new procurement routes

Corporate social responsibilities


Exposure to QS specialist software packages e.g. REVIT/ CAD/ Costx/ QSPro

 We work closely with regional and national companies to identify the relevant professional and technical skills required in these specific industries. Employment is secured by graduates in a range of organisations both in the UK and overseas. Recent graduates are working with the following companies: Mott MacDonald, E C Harris, Bullock Construction, Carillion, Thomas Vale Construction and Kier Construction. A high number of graduates continue with us on our MSc programmes in order to further specialise their surveying skills. The programme will prepare you for a career as a quantity surveyor.

The BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying at Wolverhampton offers you:

  • Full accreditation by Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Chartered Institute of Building
  • Opportunity to gain employment on course completion, graduates are often offered employment before the end of their final year
  • Opportunity to undertake a 40-week paid industrial work placement  year within a quantity surveying practice or contracting organisation
  • There is a high level of support for students on this course.  Our Business and Placement Unit will help you to identify potential employers, both in the UK and overseas (though overseas placements are less common), and will support you during your placement, with visits from your tutor to check on your progress.  
  • Our academic staff who are active researchers and consultants in their field and have professional industrial experience which they bring into their teaching;
  • Studying with a wide range of other professional disciplines in an integrated department of architecture, building and civil engineering, reflecting the modern interdisciplinary nature of construction projects;
  • Part-time day release option for those already in employment


The BSc (Honours) in Quantity Surveying enables you to:
  • improve your employability by offering practical experience of Quantity Surveying of the principles, roles and purposes of a Quantity Surveyor;
  • develop additional transferable skills in the terms of IT, team-building, independent learning skills, self-motivated academic enquiry and personal development
  • study for a degree accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) to help you on your professional career path

GCSE Maths at grade C+/4. No equivalences are accepted.

    Students must usually have studied for a minimum of two years post GCSE level. However, we will consider applications from mature students who do not have two years of post-16 study, where they have relevant work experience. Please see for further information.

If your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.

Financial Hardship:

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund. for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
