As an emergency nurse practitioner my clinical expertise became focussed on the management of minor injuries and illnesses that present to the emergency department. As well expanding my clinical expertise, diagnostic practice, treatment and discharge planning I worked with senior ENP colleagues to promote the work of the minors team within the wider emergency department, and hospital community. This included educating medical and nursing staff on the role of the minors tea, the patient presentations that we see and the treatments we are trained to provide, as well as the volume of patients we see that present to the ED as a whole, national standards targets that we meet and often exceed and a brief comparison of the service offered by my team with that of other MIUs and ENP led services locally and nationally.
I am also very active in the pre-hospital community, providing event medical services in both a clinical and managerial capacity, and volunteer with the West Midlands CARE team, a critical care response team who work alongside West Midlands Ambulance Service. I maintain my skills in trauma, resus and sepsis through these activities.
After an 8 year career in retail management I took the decision to pursue a career in healthcare.
I completed my Undergraduate Degree in Adult Nursing at the University of Wolverhampton, graduating and registering with the NMC in January 2015.
Since registration I have worked as a RN exclusively in emergency medicine. My career in emergency medicine progressed form registered nurse, to charge nurse, senior charge nurse and most recently emergency nurse practitioner, after further study. I took several formal and CPD courses throughout my career to allow me to take lead for the emergency department in trauma, resus and sepsis. I was also lead nurse for medical device training.
After returning to university to complete the emergency practitioner course I secured a position of emergency nurse practitioner within the ED I have worked in since registration, and that was the last position I held before leaving to pursue a career in higher education.
Throughout my initial undergraduate training, and throughout my career I have volunteered with first aid organisations, and worked for event medical companies providing both clinical and managerial skills at both small and large events. I was fortunate enough to work with the medical team providing event cover at the World Taekwondo Championships in Manchester 2019.
In February 2020 I started my new position at the University of Wolverhampton as clinical skills lecturer for paramedic science.
I have a keen interest in students of health sciences being taught clinical skills and practicing them at undergraduate level, and the benefits that has on student education and practice, the health service and ultimately to patient care. I wrote my dissertation for my undergraduate degree in nursing in this topic, and actively worked to improve the training offered to student nurses whilst working as a registered nurse.
Post registration my interest centred around emergency medicine, focussing on resuscitation, trauma and sepsis management in the emergency department.
