I have worked in higher education since 2015, as a Senior Lecturer in Urgent and Emergency Care at the University of Wolverhampton. I enjoy being involved in the delivery of education that is helping to develop the scope of practice for paramedics and other health professions and that supports these professionals in keeping pace with changes in urgent and emergency care.

I enjoy teaching both pre and post registration students and helping them to develop their knowledge and skills. Working in the post-registration education team, I also have an interest in developing post graduate educational programmes for paramedics and emergency practitioners, and a particular interest in the development of specialist/advanced practice for paramedics and the evolution of the profession into alternative clinical areas.

Clarke, A. (2019). What are the clinical practice experiences of specialist and advanced paramedics working in emergency department roles? A qualitative study. British Paramedic Journal. 4(3). pp. 1-7.

My career in healthcare began in 1989 when I joined the Staffordshire Ambulance Service as a cadet and after completing this course and then working as an ambulance technician for two years, I became a paramedic in 1994. In 2001 I became one of the first community paramedics in south Staffordshire, working on a rapid response car and developing collaborative partnerships with the wider primary care team to provide care closer to home for patients accessing the 999 system.

I completed my BSc (Hons) Emergency Practitioner degree at the University of Derby in 2010 and later worked as an advanced paramedic up until leaving the ambulance service.

My ambulance service career has also involved me working in telephone triage as part of a GP Out of Hours service, working in a minor injury unit and acting as the project lead for admission avoidance and high volume service user initiatives within the south Staffordshire area.

I moved into my current post witin higher education in 2015 and completed my MSc Health and Wellbeing in 2018.
