migration and deportation regimes, the sociocultural consequences of human mobility and transnational care in migrant families

I am a Social Anthropologist researching how people experience immigration and deportation regimes. Currently, I am Marie Curie Research Fellow at the University of Wolverhampton, working on a two-year research project entitled ‘Brexit and Deportations: Towards a Comprehensive and Transnational Understanding of a New System Targeting EU Citizens’ (BRAD). I focus on several aspects of this new regime: immigration policies, the agencies that enforce them, the public debate that accompanies changes in migration policies and their implementation, the migrants who become deportable, return migrants and the stayers who remain in the sending countries – who consider migrating to the UK and who adjust their (im)mobility strategies according, or in resistance to, migration policies.

Output from my previous research project ‘The Transnational Community Facing Deportability and Deportation’ was published, among others, in the Journal of Contemporary Archaeology and currently is under review for other publications. In 2016 I defended (cum laude) my PhD thesis entitled ‘Living/Leaving the Deportation Regime: Power and Violence in Deportation from the United States’, which won the Award of the Prime Minister of Poland for the best doctoral thesis. In 2018 I was Kosciuszko Foundation Fellow in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (under the supervision of Jason de León).

I worked at the Centre of Migration Research at the University of Warsaw between 2014 and 2018, starting as a Research Assistant before being appointed Lecturer in 2016. I was a part of the research team working on an interdisciplinary project ‘Unfinished Migration Transition and Ageing Population in Poland: 'Asynchronous Population Changes and the Transformation of Formal and Informal Care Institutions’. I am co-author of Ethnomorality of Care: Migrants and their Aging Parents (Routledge 2018), written together with Anna Rosińska and Weronika Kloc-Nowak. I co-authored the book 'Migrants as Agents of Change: Social Remittances in an Enlarged European Union' (Palgrave 2016) together with Izabela Grabowska, Michal Garapich and Ewa Jaźwińska.

Finally, I have been a reviewer for Transnational Social Review, Comparative Migration Studies, International Journal of Migration and Border Studies, NORMA: International Journal for Masculinity Studies and the CMR Working Paper series. I am a member of IMISCOE, ISA and ESA, and a Fellow of the Kosciuszko Foundation, the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
