We apply sociological, educational and historical perspectives to develop rich understandings of the experiences of teachers, pupils, sports participants and community groups within sport, physical activity, and Physical Education (PE).  These insights contribute to debate and inform policy and practice by better understanding the inclusive, diverse, and equitable nature of these experiences.  The research we undertake often involves collaborative work with external partners and stakeholders.

British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) commissioned our team to look into Race and Equality across the sports and organisation.  This was a national study that found students from diverse ethnic backgrounds perceive higher institutional, social, and ethnic barriers to volunteering in university sport. They may be less likely to volunteer due to perceived lack of support, lack of role models, or feeling treated differently. The reports recommendations are now being adopted by the organisation.

Our research in education has examined learning cultures and pedagogical approaches within PE and the consequences of teachers’ socialisation on their approaches to teaching with projects looking at the LGBTQ+ experiences within School Physical Education and Belonging Engagement and Self-Confidence of Sport Students. Members of the research theme sit on the Department of Sport Athena Swan Bronze Award Board, using research to inform strategies to ensure gender equity. We are the first department within the University of Wolverhampton to have been awarded an Athena, Scientific Women’s Academic Network (SWAN), Bronze Award.
