Professor Jenni Jones: Inaugural Lecture

  • When? 08 July 2025 - 08 July 2025 , 18:00
  • Where? University of Wolverhampton, Wulfruna Street, Wolverhampton, UK

The University of Wolverhampton is delighted to host an inaugural lecture with Professor Jenni Jones.

'There is clear agreement in both theory and practice that having a mentor, as the ‘guide on the side, not the sage on the stage’, is a good thing. I think to have a supportive, yet challenging critical friend to actively champion, sponsor and be an ally for your personal and professional development, is the answer to most things. But what are the questions; How can I be heard? How can I better understand myself? Where can I seek further clarity for my aspirations? How can I maximise my potential? How can I progress? Who can help me along the journey of my life?

Mentors can. Mentoring is the answer.

I’d like to share with you my journey of being mentored, of being a mentor and leading a variety of mentor programmes within the private, public and not for profit sectors. I’d also like to share a range of mentoring research projects, publications and collaborations that I have worked on too. Through this research and practice, I have discovered that there are certain ingredients that make mentoring work from an individual, relationship and programme point of view. This learning is key to mentoring but is also key to the wider context of how we teach, how we support our students and how we develop our colleagues in Higher Education too. I look forward to sharing these with you.

I suggest that we have all had mentors, whether formally or informally, in our lives – this lecture could be the moment to reflect on the gifts they have given us, and think about how we can keep on giving the gifts to others in return."
