Ning Wang
MA FINE ART
Ning Wang is a Chinese artist who utilises costumes, performance, photography, and film to explore themes based around national identity, relocation, and freedom.
During her studies in England, she chose to examine her period of adjustment to British culture. These early works convey a sense of incompatibility, constraint, and loneliness.
As she began to settle and establish friends and connections, her work subsequently changed. Rather than exploring themes of loneliness and isolation, they revolve more around racial and cultural pride. Her series of portraits of people of different ages, nationalities, genders, and backgrounds, posing in the same traditional Chinese dress embodies this idea.
Including pride, her most recent work embodies confidence. Through a series of performance/ videos; she walks through the streets of her adopted hometown wearing a traditional Chinese dress. Walking past locals and foreigners alike, drawing attention or lack of, to the variety of different races and cultures.
