lorraine McGinnes
MA FINE ART
Lorraine McGinnes’ installation of oil paintings is a direct response to the cancer she endured in 2018. Contemplating the impact such an illness has had upon those around her, McGinnes has responded to times “between the action”. The viewer is invited to examine the thoughts and experience of these paused figures and witness the remnants of what remains. Is it passive reflection upon this rupture in their lives or thoughts of rage and retribution for what has passed?
McGinnes displays a varied use of paint ranging from thick palette knife applications to underpainting left exposed and a redacted approach of wiping away or violently scratching through the paint back to bare canvas. Photography plays a large role in the methodology. Images captured from her sickbed and lengthy recovery along with rediscovered and recovered imagery from family albums combine as source material for the works. We watch these solitary figures in their own space often amongst nature, constantly drawing us back to our inescapable conclusion.
