MA Fine Art
Ceridwen Powell is a disabled interdisciplinary artist. Experimenting with materials and techniques such as painting, mixed media sculpture and digital and analogue photography, Powell explores representation within disability and issues around disabled rights. Her work is mainly conceptual, with a sense of play and curiosity inviting the viewer to engage with key debates integral to understanding the complexities of life as a disabled person.
‘DWP R.I.P.’ considers the issue of welfare reform-related deaths and speaks out against the treatment of disabled people under austerity policies and the demonising of disabled people by the current government and media. Using everyday materials to express how the mistreatment of disabled people has become routine, almost mundane, the installation challenges the viewer to look at the reality of welfare reform and how it is affecting real lives.
