Alexandra Phillips

MA FINE ART

Born in the Black country, Phillips is an artist who uses the rich cultural heritage around her to produce pieces that reveal a biographical approach and signal broader regional identities. Utilising the dialect of the region, the sounds and language she grew up with informs her practice. This language, although strange and unusual for those on the outside, illuminates a history that links Black Country inhabitants to the past whilst simultaneously offering insights to a new and ‘untouched’ world for ‘visitors’ to the work. Combining spray paint techniques on canvas as well accompanying sound, these mixed media pieces are created with the hope of portraying a part of the artist’s home. The spoken dialect can be heard whilst the visuals allow viewers to tune in phonetically, the artist adopts colours heavily influenced by the area`s past, the industry it is famous for, and a style that reflects something of the space within which it was conceived.
