Entry requirements for students from Afghanistan

International Foundation Year

Baccalauria / Baccalaureate Certificate

Students with a minimum average of 50% of the sum of the highest marks for all subjects are eligible for the International Foundation year. Vocational/Technical Baccalauria are not accepted.

IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all components is also required.



Acceptable for first year entry or entry into year 2 (mapping is required for year 2) provided at least 60% (or GPA of 2.5) is achieved.

Licence – Bachelor degree

Students who have completed a Licence from a NARIC or government recognised institution with a minimum score of 60% (or GPA of 2.5 overall) can normally be considered for admission onto the final year of a Bachelor programme


Bachelor of Science (Engineering) degree from Kabul University

Students with the above award can normally be considered for admission onto a Master’s degree.

A score of 70% is considered comparable to a UK 2:1

A score of 60% is considered comparable to a UK 2:2

A score of less than 60% is considered comparable to a UK 3 and would require the completion of a pre-master’s course


The American University of Afghanistan uses the same marking system as in the USA.

English Language Requirements

English language requirements vary by course and department but the standard University requirement is 6.0 with 5.5 in every component in IELTS or the same scores in the University's own entry test, the Wolverhampton English Proficiency Examination (WEPE).

Some courses may require a higher level of English language proficiency than the University standard requirements. For details of each programme's English language requirement please see the individual course pages.
