‘The elephant we’ll never forget…’

Staff and former students are being asked to pass on their memories of a favourite old pub as part of a major project run by the Black Country Living Museum.

The Elephant & Castle, which stood on the corner of Cannock Road and Stafford Road, was a popular haunt amongst University personnel up until it was demolished unexpectedly in 2001.

A grand Edwardian pub which had been in existence since at least 1834, even the well-known sculptured elephant which adorned the building has not returned to public gaze since the surprise demolition.

As part of Black Country Living Museum’s Forging Ahead programme, plans are underway to recreate the Elephant & Castle on the museum site, situated near Dudley, just six miles away from the University’s City Campus.

In particular, memories are being sought of the pub from the 1940s-60s. Do people have any personal stories about the pub? Did you or your family and friends drink there? Play dominoes there? Did you ever hear any stories about the pub? Or just use it as a meeting place?

Many past and present University employees and Alumni are expected to have been regular visitors to the Elephant & Castle due to its proximity to the City campus.

Anyone with any memories is asked to contact the Collections team of the Museum. Click here to see all the details and how to get in touch.
