Professor Laura Caulfield, Chair of the Institute for Community Research and Development at the University of Wolverhampton, has published a new book to provide an insight into research methods in criminology.

‘Criminology Skills and Research for Beginners’ was published last month, and is an updated version with fresh material to the edition first released back in 2015.

The book offers a comprehensive and engaging guide to research methods in Criminology, and the skills required for academic success.

Laura, who has writted the book with Jane Hill, says: “We decided to write the first edition of the book to fill a gap we had identified in our own teaching of criminological research.

“We needed a book aimed specifically at new researchers in criminology, which placed research methods within the context of student’s wider studies in criminology.

“That book didn’t exist, and so we decided to write the proposal for ‘Criminological Research for Beginners’.

“The first edition - published in 2015 - was a huge success and we’ve made the book even better in this second edition by including four new chapters on study skills, and created lots of new website content to go with the book.”

Subjects covered in the book include:

  • An examination of the theoretical, political and ethical debates in criminological research.
  • A complete guide to planning criminological research, assisting student researchers in identifying their research questions, choosing their research methods and critiquing the available literature.
  • Guidance on the practicalities and processes of collecting data.
  • A discussion of the process of analysing data and writing up research.
  • Research skills in Criminology, including detailed coverage of writing skills, referencing, dissertations and research reports, presentation skills and revision.
  • The book also offers additional coverage of the politics of criminological research and the presentation of official crime statistics.
