University restores lost flag of HMS Captain

The University of Wolverhampton has completed the restoration of the lost flag of HMS Captain, the Royal Navy warship that sank off the coast of Spain in 1870. This marks the first time in British history that the flag will be placed on national display.

Previously stored in tatters and deep storage, the flag was rescued thanks to funding from the University’s Centre for Historical Research (CHR), the Faculty of Arts, Business and Social Sciences (FABSS) Small Grant Scheme, and the public backed Find the Captain Project. Restoration was carried out by a certified historical textile conservationist in Bristol.

The flag will be housed in a custom-built protective display case, featuring a brass plaque inscribed:

This historic artefact will be unveiled at a high-profile gala at the Royal Geographical Society in September, attended by distinguished guests. Tickets for the prestigious event can be booked on the Royal Museums Greenwich website: HMS Captain: Technological Triumph to Tragedy | Events London

Dr. Howard Fuller, Project Manager of Find the Captain, said:

“The restoration of HMS Captain’s flag is not just a tribute to those lost at sea, but a testament to the University’s commitment to preserving national heritage. Few universities have ever played such a direct role in rescuing and conserving a priceless historical artefact.”

The restoration coincides with a major expedition led by Ocean Infinity, who are using advanced scanning technology to identify the wreck of HMS Captain. If confirmed, the discovery will make international headlines, further elevating the University’s role in this historic achievement.

The University is currently seeking the final £2,190 needed to complete the display case and transport the flag to London for its unveiling. Donations can be made on the University’s Alumni pages: https://www.wlv.ac.uk/alumni/events/find-the-captain

Finding the Captain, a forthcoming book from Seaforth Publishing, will document the project’s journey and the University’s pivotal role.
