International study of Emotional Eating during COVID-19

People’s eating habits during the COVID-19 pandemic are providing food for thought in a new piece of research led by the University of Wolverhampton.

The University of Wolverhampton has launched a large international project exploring people’s experience of emotions and eating behaviours during Covid-19. Professor Tracey Devonport who has been working collaboratively with colleagues from the University of Jyväskylä; Finland (Dr Montse Ruiz) and University of Northampton (Dr Jo Chen-Wilson) to develop this project explains: ‘It is likely that we have heard friends and family talking about eating more during the COVID-19 pandemic because they are experiencing emotions such as bored, stressed or frustrated. We wanted to develop a research project that explores emotions and eating and in doing so provide simple interventions that may help manage emotional eating during these challenging times."

This study is being rolled out internationally across countries including UK, Australia, Canada, USA, Finland, Spain, Italy, Russia, Portugal, China, Taiwan, Philippines and Korea. If you are aged 18 and over and would you like to know more about how your emotions are related to your eating behaviours, we are inviting participation in this study.

We are also asking colleagues to help disseminate this project to our participating countries by sharing the relevant links with contacts overseas, If you would like to take part, or know of other people who may be interested, you can access the study using the following links:
