Lethal in Lace: The story of a Witchcraft poppet talk by Dr Louise Fenton

Wednesday 15 July, 5:00pm-6:00pm

Dr Louise Fenton will examine the history and story behind one of the most iconic poppets held in the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle, Cornwall. This doll, a striking creation with a dagger through her face, has a fully documented history. Made to thwart the evil influence of a Nazi wife in Bavaria, she was smuggled through Switzerland and back to the UK for the spell to be completed. Dr Fenton will uncover how the idea for the doll evolved and how she was made. She is now over 60 years old with a powerful story to tell. This is a fully illustrated talk.

Dr Louise Fenton is a senior lecturer in contextual studies within the School of Art at the University of Wolverhampton. Her research has focussed on Representations of Voodoo and Witchcraft. Louise has an interest in the social history behind the cursed objects and this talk is from her forthcoming book, ‘A Cabinet of Curses’ for Troy Books.
