Join us for a fascinating exploration of Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) with Judith Potts, Founder and Trustee of Esme's Umbrella and Jonathan Ward, Development Manager (Employment) Thomas Pocklington Trust.

Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) is an intriguing, yet often misunderstood neurological condition that causes visual hallucinations in individuals with low vision or sight loss. These hallucinations can range from simple patterns to complex images, and while they can be startling, they are not a sign of mental illness or dementia.

During this insightful discussion, you will learn about this little-known condition, its causes, symptoms, how to find support and strategies for managing CBS.

Judith Potts – Founder of Esme’s Umbrella

Judith was an actress – working under her maiden name, Judith Fielding.

She founded Act One to bring drama classes to children in schools, pre-schools and nurseries, for whom she wrote plays and recitals.

She coached child and young actors in voice, character and audition technique – plus the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art examinations.

She used the skills of the performing arts to give presentation coaching to senior executives, for whom she also wrote and directed speeches and presentations.

For nine years – following a breast cancer diagnosis – she wrote an online Column for the The Daily Telegraph, about cancer, medical charities and general health. When her mother developed Charles Bonnet Syndrome, the condition became part of the Column.

In 2015 she launched Esme’s Umbrella – named after her late mother – at the House of Commons to raise awareness of CBS, to create ways to support people who develop the condition and to source funding for research.

Esme’s Umbrella worked with the World Health Organisation to give CBS a code in ICD 11. It is now recognised as a condition in its own right.

In December 2021, Esme’s Umbrella received Charity Status in England and Wales.
