Rising Judo star selected for European Championships

A rising Judo star from the University of Wolverhampton has been selected to compete at the 2018 European Championships in Israel. 

Student Acelya Toprak will make her European Championships debut in Tel Aviv from 26-28 April 2018.

Acelya, 19, is one of the youngest members of the 12-strong GB Team and will compete in the under 57kg category.

Toprak, who is studying a BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise  degree, is a silver medallist from the 2017 Junior European Championship and won the Belgrade European Open at a senior level last year.

Nigel Donohue, British Judo Performance Director, said: “For the first championships of 2018, we have selected a strong and exciting team of experience and potential and we optimistically go into this event with high expectations.

"The team that we have selected is a very strong mix of youth and experience. We wish the team the very best at these championships and are confident that they will put in some strong performances for GB."

The British Judo Centre of Excellence is based at the University of Wolverhampton’s Walsall Campus.
