Referee named football hero

A passionate football referee from the University of Wolverhampton has received top recognition for her commitment to the women’s game.

Chloe Matthews has been chosen as a British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Higher Education Football and Futsal Hero.

The award recognises her outstanding work in supporting, promoting and officiating the women’s game at Wolverhampton and the wider community.

Sports Coaching Practice (Football) student Chloe, from Cannock, will feature in a campaign to promote Girls’ Football Week from 23-29 April 2018.

The 20-year-old said: "It's fantastic to be recognised by BUCS and I'm really glad that I can be a part of a campaign to get more girls involved in football in any aspect of the game."

Chloe was nominated for the award by Tracy Nash, Professional and Workforce Sports Manager at the University. She said: “Chloe is a great Ambassador for the Sport. It is great for her to be recognised as someone who goes that extra mile. Her passion is obviously to inspire others to join her and whilst she continues to excel in the Refereeing and Coaching of Football she still supports the grassroots game inspiring others to get involved as well.”

The HE Heroes campaign aims to recognise and share the successes of workforce volunteers who have gone above and beyond in their role and contribution to the game across Higher Education Women’s Football and Futsal.

Nominees were selected who demonstrated their passion and commitment to the growth of women’s football, the positive impact they have made at their institution and being a positive role model.
