Counselling and Psychotherapy
The programme has a foundation in humanist values, with emphasis on an empathic therapist-client relationship as being central to mental health work.It allows an integrative framework for the development of a range of clinical, research, and reflective skills. It offers an applied working knowledge of humanistic therapy, with a view to integration of other therapeutic modalities. Each year, you will undertake a range of modules where you will learn from qualified experts in the field, who will teach you how to engage with clients and make a positive contribution to their welfare. You will engage with experiential learning throughout the entirety of the programme and develop a robust skill set.
The vitality of the course comes from an experienced and supportive course team that is passionate about empowerment in mental health. Building on a programme history spanning two decades, the programme is committed to the development of ethical and reflective practitioners who work collaboratively with clients as co-creators of the therapeutic experience.

The team has longstanding relationships with experienced placement supervisors in the NHS, education sector and surrounding services. We work closely to ensure that course content and clinical placement experiences remain at the forefront of modern mental health practice.
Our team

Our team are members of professional bodies – including the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the British Psychological Society (BPS) as chartered psychologists, and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). You will be learning from experienced practitioners in forensic, counselling, and clinical Psychology.

The course is part of the School of Psychology in the Faculty of Education, Health, & Wellbeing. The School of Psychology is the professional home to over 50 teaching and research staff, bringing a broad range of interests and experience to benefit students learning from our portfolio of courses. Our School is recognised as one of the leading providers of psychology education, using innovative teaching methods that focus on the application of scientific and theoretical principles to the study of people’s lives. Psychology staff are grouped into a variety of highly active research clusters through our Centre for Psychological Research, publishing in the latest academic journals and working to make a real-world impact on people’s lives.
We provide multiple opportunities to enhance your career and create networks inside and outside of the department, including volunteering networks, peer mentoring, and the opportunity to become a research assistant for our academic staff using the research opportunities network.
On campus
The course is based at our city centre campus - the millennium city building, where you learn in a multidisciplinary environment alongside our colleagues in nursing and social care. The building offers a unique learning space in our psychology labs, simulated environments for creative research projects, and our cyberpsychology lab with the latest in virtual-reality and eye-tracking equipment.
Training support
We offer many levels of support, such as academic, placement, research, and cohort tutors who provide personal support and professional mentoring in relation to many aspects of the training. While in training you will have access to our professional practice resources, teaching materials, CPD activities and regular tutorials with members of the team. We also support graduates as they enter the workplace, as alumni and as members of the professional community. We work in partnership with Advance HE, the nationally recognised body in teaching quality, to continually develop the quality of our courses with modern teaching and learning practises.
Course content
During the programme, you will be welcomed into our postgraduate community, working closely with your fellow students and our team of psychological therapists and trainers.
Our programme begins with an intensive welcome-week study package designed to facilitate your transition to postgraduate study. It includes group contracting, forming your peer relationships, expectations of trainees & staff, roles in the training process, library & literature searching skills, project management, and resilience building.
The training journey incorporates a diverse range of scaffolding learning activities, facilitating trainees to autonomous self-directed practise in alignment with the latest practise-requirements. The programme provides regular opportunities to demonstrate your self-awareness, benefitting from a regular process of self-exploration, self-examination, and reflection in a safe and confidential setting. You will develop critical thinking skills and learn to evaluate evidence in the pursuit of ethical decision-making in line with the BACP ethical framework. [Text Wrapping Break]
Training
You will experience a variety of high-quality learning experiences, such as lectures, seminars, blended learning, online materials, group tutorials, and practical workshops. Assignments are supported with formative learning activities such as essays, research proposals, debates, presentations, quizzes, and online discussions. As you make progress, you develop transferrable skills in writing, analysis, research, problem-solving, and reporting. You grow as an independent psychological researcher, skilled in complex problem-solving. Teaching develops knowledge and skills through hands-on work with psychological data, examining issues from across the spectrum of applied psychology. You will also examine various philosophical approaches to psychology in order to be able to evaluate, critique and question current psychological thinking.
All our courses actively embed employability into every aspect of the course, ensuring you are prepared to enter the workforce upon graduation. Graduates finish with a range of marketable skills in problem solving, data analysis, communication, and information synthesis, and are well placed to take on further study or a career role. Research is also embedded throughout the programme, enabling you to see the links between research and the real world.
Structure:
- Week 1 - Welcome Week: Includes an intensive week of teaching and group-based activities to develop your group contract and prepare for university life at the postgraduate level.
- Semester 1: Foundations. Your first semester includes a range of modules designed to prepare you for placement and build the foundations of your therapeutic approach. You will go through a range of theoretical and experiential activities in therapeutic relationships, relational dynamics, starting and ending therapeutic relationships, assessment, ethics, risk management, professional conduct, engaging in supervision, and much more.
- Semester 2: placement, research, and growing autonomy. You will begin your placement in January/February of the year and work with an approved placement provider to put your skills into practice in a live clinical setting. Your supervisor will provide you with detailed supervision, ensuring you have the reflective space in which to grow as a practitioner. You will also engage in a research project, studying an issue relevant to your course. You will be provided with a research supervisor who will work with you to propose a research question, collect data, analyse and interpret your study, and produce a thesis with meaningful recommendations for practice. The programme continues to develop advanced practise skills as well as a range of professional workshops, including: how to set up a private practise.
- Summer term: You will attend the Student Annual Research Conference hosted by the School of Psychology and have the opportunity to present your research. You will also have an ‘online therapy bootcamp’ to learn skills in the nuances of working remotely. Our specialist tutor will provide an overview of the most recent research in this dynamic and changing field of practice.

*Entry Guidance note: Graduates of University of Wolverhampton BSc Psychology and Counselling degree are considered to automatically meet the counselling skills criterion in full. The BSc Psychology and Counselling has been designed by the professional team to include skills training with relevant placement, and place graduates at an ideal entry position for this programme.
Admissions – apply early
Your journey starts with an interview, where you meet with members of the course team and get your opportunity to shine. The interview includes a discussion of your experience, research interests, and learning.
To enrol on the programme, you must complete the following:
- Interview
- Occupational Health Screen: Allow 4 weeks for completion.
DBS: Allow a minimum of 8 weeks for completion. You are advised to secure a DBS at the point of application and register with the DBS Online update service within 1 month of receiving your certificate. You will need to share your original document and code with our DBS team.
*Late applicants: If you apply in August/September please be aware there may not be sufficient time for you to complete a new DBS. You are advised to apply only if you have a current DBS and online share code. The university cannot accelerate or waive this requirement, and you will not be able to enrol or access our online resources until it is fully complete.
Clinical placements: A network of partners
You will undertake a clinical placement throughout your studies. We have a network of partner providers who work with us each year, hosting trainees in placement settings. As an enrolled trainee we will connect you with our partner network to open up opportunities for placements across the Midlands and beyond.
- All trainees are required to work in a supervised clinical setting and achieve 100 hours of direct clinical contact throughout the programme.
- Please note that the responsibility for securing placement lies with the trainee. We offer assistance and networking opportunities only.

These fees relate to new entrants only for the academic year indicated for entry onto the course, any subsequent years study may be subject to an annual increase, usually in line with inflation.
- An upper second-class honours degree (2:1). Graduates of a BSc Psychology & Counselling degree are ideally placed for entry. Applicants who have not completed any counselling component, as part of their previous qualification, will need to demonstrate an understanding to the nature of the counselling profession (or some experience in a helping role) and an increased self-reflective attitude upon life experience and the emotional stability required for counselling practise.
- You should also have a good standard of written and spoken English (IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each element) or an acceptable equivalent.
- Successful Interview Selection: Beyond the academic/critical analytic skills (demonstrate the 2:1 degree) the interview process will assess potential participants though a holistic approach taking into the following attributes: - Self-awareness, maturity and stability - Ability to make use of and reflect upon life experience - Capacity to cope with the emotional demands of the course - Ability to cope with the intellectual and academic requirement - Ability to form a helping relationship - Ability to be self-critical and use both positive and negative feedback - Awareness of the nature of prejudice and oppression - Awareness of issues of difference and equality - Ability to recognise the need for personal and professional support - Competence in, or the aptitude to develop generic professional skills, including: literacy, numeracy, information technology, administrative skills, self- management skills, communication and interpersonal skills.

Due to the professional nature of some of our courses you will be required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check. We will coordinate both of these non-academic conditions with you should your course require this and you receive an offer from us.
