Jamal Khatib, BEng, MEng(Sc), PhD, CEng, EUR ING, FICE, FHEA, PG.Cert. Ed, PG.Cert. PjtMgt, Cert. EnvMgt, MIEI(till 2015), MEPC, MIRED, SMUACSEE, MOIA, is Emeritus Professor of the University of Wolverhampton (UoW) – UK. His academic career began in 1987 as a Research Student/Assistant/Fellow, at the University of Aberdeen. In 1994 he moved to take another Research Fellow post at the University of South Wales (USW) until 1997. He then took a permanent position as a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU). During that time and due to research collaboration with IMUST-China, he was awarded the title of Honorary Professor in 2001. After 9 years at SHU, he moved to the UoW as a Reader in Civil Engineering and became a Professor in July 2012. He achieved the Chartered Engineer status of the Institution of Civil Engineer (ICE) in 2010, the European Engineer status (EUR ING) in 2015 and the Fellowship status of the ICE in 2016. Areas of research specialism include a number of sustainable construction materials themes: a) use of waste in the production of construction materials, b) novel construction materials (e.g. metakaolin), c) concrete subjected to harsh environments, d) lightweight and self-compacting concrete and e) behaviour of structural materials. Prof Khatib was one of the early UK researchers who conducted research on metakaolin as partial substitution of cement and his publications in this area have been extensively cited. The products of his extensive research activities have been comprehensively disseminated through: about 500 refereed academic journal & conference papers, text books, abstracts, research seminars and workshops; articles and features. According to the ISI Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar Prof Khatib has an H-index of 23, 29 and 40 respectively. According to a study conducted by Stanford University in October 2020 and October 2021, Prof Khatib was classified as one of the top 2% researchers in the world in the building and construction field (https://data.mendeley.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/2). Microsoft Academic classified Prof Khatib as one of one of the top authors in cement (G-Index:18). According to Google scholar Prof Khatib has over 9000 citations and many of his papers were ranked as the top 25 articles. He acts as a reviewer to 200 international academic journals, book publishers & others. He sits on the technical committees of over 100 international conferences. Publons classified Prof Khatib as one of the top reviewers globally. He is an Editorial Board member of 10 academic Journals including the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editor roles. Prof Khatib was a submitting member for the RAE/REF 1996 (USW), 2001 (SHU) & 2008/2014 (UoW).
Prof Khatib is a recipient of research funding from the European Union (EU), the British Council, The Institution of Structural Engineers and the Royal Society. He established strong research links with Universities across the world; China, Algeria, India, Turkey; Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Iraq, Ukraine, US, Canada, France, Finland, Portugal, Slovenia, South Africa, Austria & Australia.
Research and Consultancy are in the broad field of Sustainable Construction/Structural Materials. Expertise includes the utilisation of waste/recycled and novel materials in cement based systems to produce construction materials (e.g. concrete, pavement). Waste comprises industrial by-products (e.g. fly ash, silica fume, slag, desulphurised waste-FGD), demolition waste (e.g. recycled brick, recycled concrete, ground brick, foamed glass), municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (MSWI-BA), sludges (e.g. sewage). Novel materials include metakaolin (calcined clay), hybrid/composite materials, novel light-weight aggregates, alkali activation of pozzolans and geopolymers. Prof Khatib was one of the early UK researchers to study the effect of metakaolin on the performance of cement based materials. Published work on metakaolin has been widely cited.
Other consultancy/research expertise includes Lime Stabilisation of Soils, utilisation of industrial by-products to stabilise contaminated soils, Environmental Assessment of Soil & Construction Materials containing waste (e.g. MSWI-BA) and Rammed Earth. Structural Assessment and Performance of Building Materials form integral parts of this work. Prediction and modeling of thermal induced cracking in reinforced concrete structures is another area of research. Research interests are also in the use of waste/recycled materials in Pavement Engineering. Other research activities include Construction Project Management.
Research involves the study of mechanical and durability properties. These include, strength (e.g. compressive, flexural), non-destructive testing, chemical attack, prediction of chloride penetration into concrete and its effect on reinforcement corrosion, carbonation, porosity and pore size distribution, capillary water absorption, shrinkage (e.g. chemical, plastic, autogenous) using novel techniques, product of hydration using TG analysis, leaching characteristics of heavy elements and others (i.e. environmental impact).
The above research focuses on the utilisation of waste/recycled materials in producing high grade construction materials and this is in line with the government (and global) agenda to reduce CO2 emission, which rises the potential for research funding.
Prof Khatib has more than 300 publications and 3000 citations, google h-index of 25 and an i-10 index of 39. http://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=eRDOWn8AAAAJ&view_op=list_works&pagesize=100 . He has 16 PhD completions, currently supervising 12 PhDs and has examined 33 PhD students.
