Research and Consultancy are in the broad field of Sustainable Construction/Structural Materials. Expertise includes the utilisation of waste/recycled and novel materials in cement based systems to produce construction materials (e.g. concrete, pavement). Waste comprises industrial by-products (e.g. fly ash, silica fume, slag, desulphurised waste-FGD), demolition waste (e.g. recycled brick, recycled concrete, ground brick, foamed glass), municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (MSWI-BA), sludges (e.g. sewage). Novel materials include metakaolin (calcined clay), hybrid/composite materials, novel light-weight aggregates, alkali activation of pozzolans and geopolymers. Prof Khatib was one of the early UK researchers to study the effect of metakaolin on the performance of cement based materials. Published work on metakaolin has been widely cited.

Other consultancy/research expertise includes Lime Stabilisation of Soils, utilisation of industrial by-products to stabilise contaminated soils, Environmental Assessment of Soil & Construction Materials containing waste (e.g. MSWI-BA) and Rammed Earth. Structural Assessment and Performance of Building Materials form integral parts of this work. Prediction and modeling of thermal induced cracking in reinforced concrete structures is another area of research. Research interests are also in the use of waste/recycled materials in Pavement Engineering. Other research activities include Construction Project Management.

Research involves the study of mechanical and durability properties. These include, strength (e.g. compressive, flexural), non-destructive testing, chemical attack, prediction of chloride penetration into concrete and its effect on reinforcement corrosion, carbonation, porosity and pore size distribution, capillary water absorption, shrinkage (e.g.  chemical, plastic, autogenous) using novel techniques, product of hydration using TG analysis, leaching characteristics of heavy elements and others (i.e. environmental impact).

The above research focuses on the utilisation of waste/recycled materials in producing high grade construction materials and this is in line with the government (and global) agenda to reduce CO2 emission, which rises the potential for research funding.

Prof Khatib has more than 600 publications and 11,000 citations, google h-index of 48 and an i-10 index of 156.  http://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=eRDOWn8AAAAJ&view_op=list_works&pagesize=100    . He has over 20 PhD completions, currently supervising 6 PhDs and has examined over 60 PhD students.
