Chassis: Steering Arms

28/11/2016

They are currently produced out of aluminium bar, which has been turned to produce a simple, efficient track rod.

I was given the aim to reduce the weight as much as possible, but of course, keep the strength. I considered several ideas, but I concluded that producing them out of carbon fibre tube with threaded aluminium inserts bonded in to each end would be the best solution given the budget available and the resources/machinery available to me at the university campus.

Above is a screenshot taken from Solidworks of my design with the correct materials applied to give me an indication of mass in kg. This design weighs a very appealing 50 grams and will be strong enough for what it is needed for.
