In this blog, hear from recent graduate Ben Welborn, who reflects on his time studying at the University of Wolverhampton.

"Hello! I’m Ben, a recent graduate from the University of Wolverhampton, proudly holding a degree in Accounting and Finance with honours. In just a few weeks, I’ll be stepping into my dream role as a Deputy Management Accountant—a journey that began right here at Wolverhampton.

"From the very first day, the University of Wolverhampton was all about growth, both academically and personally. Every lecture, discussion, and assignment introduced me to fresh perspectives and honed my analytical and critical thinking skills. I remember teaming up with classmates on group projects, where we shared ideas, challenged each other, and worked through complex problems together. Those experiences didn’t just deepen my understanding of accounting principles—they also helped me build confidence, polish my communication skills, and master the art of presenting, which used to be a bit of a challenge for me.

"The course itself was rigorous, but that’s what made it rewarding. I quickly learned the importance of time management and juggling multiple priorities—skills that I know will serve me well in my career. One of the best parts of the program was the strong support system around me. The academic staff were incredible. They were always available—whether I needed help with a tricky topic, guidance on assignments, or just a quick pep talk during exam season. Knowing I could reach out to them by email or pop into their office was invaluable, especially when things got challenging.

"One of the standout aspects of my time here was the support from my academy coach. They would check in regularly, making sure I was managing well with the course demands and offering guidance and encouragement along the way. And let’s talk about the Student Support Services—I’d highly recommend them! They helped me polish my academic writing, prepare for exams, and even coached me through the interview process for my current role. Thanks to their support, I’m not only graduating with a degree but also with nine ACCA exemptions, setting me well on my way to becoming a chartered accountant.

"Looking back, my time at the University of Wolverhampton has given me more than just academic knowledge—it’s given me the skills, confidence, and network to kickstart my career. If you’re considering Wolverhampton, or if you’re already here and want to make the most of your experience, I can confidently say you’re in the right place."
