From Walsall to New York: Alumnus returns to where it all began

The University of Wolverhampton’s Walsall Campus proudly welcomed back alumnus Daniel O’Connor, as he returned from New York to the West Midlands, not just to visit family, but to revisit the place where his professional journey began.

Daniel graduated with a BA in Physical Education in 2008, followed by a PGCE in Secondary Education: Physical Education in 2009. Today, he serves as Director of Athletics & Physical Education at the United Nations International School in New York City, a testament to the global impact of a Wolverhampton education.

During his visit, Daniel enjoyed a nostalgic afternoon with family, reflecting on his time at the University. “We had a nice family afternoon reminiscing,” he shared. “My dad was thrilled to be back, pointing out where he lived and chatting to staff at the Sports Centre, someone told him he still holds the swimming record after all this time.”

The visit held special significance for the O’Connor family. Daniel’s parents first met at the former Students' Union, making the return a full-circle moment that underscored their deep personal ties to the University.

Daniel’s journey from Walsall to New York is a shining example of the University of Wolverhampton’s ethos as the University of Opportunity, empowering students to thrive and succeed both locally and internationally. His story highlights the enduring strong connection the University’s alumni maintain, regardless of where their careers take them.
