Student Update: Your IT Essentials - Software, Microsoft 365, Canvas and myWLV app

30/09/2020

Access to IT and learning technologies will form a significant part of your educational experience at the University this semester. There are a set of standard and core IT essentials that all students need to access, as well as specialist software for some courses.

It is essential that you to familiarise yourself with your digital learning environment and those IT essentials you will need for your day-to-day studying.

Core IT Essentials

Whether you are studying from home on your own device or on-campus using a University PC, you will have access to all our core applications:

  • Microsoft 365 for your email, file creation, storage and video/chat.
  • Canvas for your Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
  • MyWLV app for central access to everything in one place (including your timetable behind the Calendar button).
  • E:Vision where you can update your details and log a Helpdesk call to your Faculty Student Services.

You can access a full range of free software to use on your own laptop or PC, including a free version of Microsoft Office 365.

Please look at the Software Catalogue; this is an A-Z list of all available software for you to use both on and off campus, and how to get it (using AppsAnywhere)

You can find more information here: wlv.ac.uk/software

Microsoft Teams

MS Teams is an application you gain access to with your Microsoft 365 account and can be used for video and chat. Students can use the web version (open up a browser, go to https://office.com and sign in with your University email address and password) or you can install the application to your device (like Word and OneDrive).

Your lecturers and tutors will use Teams to invite you to video sessions or meetings online. Once signed into MS 365, you will be able to access these meetings from the invitation in your email.

Specialist software for your course

If your course requires specialist software, for example, Adobe Creative Cloud or Matlab, the course team will provide you with more information on how it can be accessed.

You can also check the Software Catalogue; for a full list of all software for you to use both on and off-campus, this includes SPSS and NVivo.
