Illustration students see lockdown work come to life

23/07/2020

University of Wolverhampton Illustration degree students who had worked on a live creative project brief for the Mander Shopping Centre during lockdown have seen their work come to life.

The five students were given special socially distanced access to DIS Group print company based in Wolverhampton to see their X-Large Digital illustration works being printed on high quality vinyl. The two-hour visit comprised of demonstrations, a full tour and an insight into the professional world of printing.

The team was commissioned to produce artwork for three hoardings, measuring 3 metres by 60 metres for a possible new pop-up games arcade at the Centre to attract new visitors in the future.

Stuart Varley, Senior Lecturer in Illustration at the University, said: “The students understood it was fantastic opportunity to get the chance to see one of Britain’s premiere printers in action and to see original artworks of famous designers and image makers.

“Getting the chance to witness their own X-Large digital wall illustrations being prepared for print, printed and laser cut on high tech industrial machines, in preparation for installation on three giant walls and floor decal in the shopping centre was an amazing experience for them.

“The students have excelled during the whole project from idea generation and research through to designing brilliant contemporary visual digital outputs. They have produced fantastic digital works using a variety of industry standard software and I think getting the chance to see their own work being printed gave them a real insight into working within the creative industries.

Dave Purcell, Director at DIS Group, said: “Wolverhampton is a hub of creative talent and it is clear that the students are achieving really high standards and are positively pushing their limits with the X-Large scale artwork pieces they have produced for this project.”

Dan Turner, Illustration student and lead Artworker, said: ‘’The visit was incredible. It was amazing seeing our work printed. The whole process was explained and I can’t believe how famous some of their clientele are. They had original Jamie Hewlett Artworks! They also construct loads of diverse stuff like giant milk cartons which was brilliant.”

The project opened up collaboration with the Illustration Course, the Mander Centre and DIS Group, offering students the opportunity to produce highly skilled and relevant work, taking the skills learnt in the studio into a live brief and a public setting.

The team was made up of second year students, Daniel Turner (lead art worker), Hannah James, Fynn Riseborough, Patrick Campbell-Brookes and first year student, Nayia Balatsou.

The artwork is now installed in the Mander Centre in Wolverhampton.
