Environmental Health Practitioners are highly trained and experienced members of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. This new apprenticeship undergraduate degree has been developed to cater for a more diverse entry route which allows the apprentice to complete the first stage towards their chartership.

Protection of public health is the key principle underpinning the work of Environmental Health Practitioners (EHP), whether that is investigating a food poisoning outbreak or accident at work, through to noise problems, housing issues and contamination of the environment.

Through the Degree Apprenticeship programme, you will develop the skills and an appreciation to address a wide range of issues and to lead and work with others in the delivery of successful projects.

You will be supported by your employer and a tutor and skills coach on the programme. Course content includes elements of work-based learning, field work, project control and on-site decision making, management and liaison with clients, the public and business operators.

The degree will incorporate vocational and academic elements. You will achieve BSc (Hons) Environmental Health degree upon completion of the apprenticeship programme.

The Apprenticeship offers one of the pathways which lead to chartered status as a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner. Chartership can be gained following
the completion of the apprenticeship and after two years
experience post-graduation. On completion of the Apprenticeship, as an EHP you will act on behalf of the public or business operators to provide professional services in the pathway area chosen. The CIEH Professional Standards define what is expected of environmental health professionals: who improve and protect people’s health, safety and wellbeing by securing safer, cleaner and healthier environments (or aspire to do so).

The Standards facilitate professional development, learning and progression and ultimately uphold and improve standards within environmental health for public protection. As an approved partner, we have integrated the skills and knowledge set out by CIEH within all our modules to include critical thinking, technical expertise, leadership, collaboration and organisational awareness.

This is a practice-based course with the integration of practical case studies, visits and real-life examples throughout the course to allow you to develop the ability to make informed decisions, within the legislative framework to protect health and promote wellbeing.

How it works

The Environmental Health Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship has been designed and developed in collaboration with employers and professional bodies; to access it, you will need to be currently employed within the Environmental Health public or private sector.

The typical duration for this degree apprenticeship is four years and requires one day of
attendance per week (for 24 weeks a year with typically 2 one-week modules over the summer period) and studying other days through a work-based learning mode.

The course requires you to complete all modules in order to achieve a successful completion. All modules have to be completed in order to successfully complete the Apprenticeship.

In addition to the skills mentioned, we strive to inculcate professional skills within the five key areas of Environmental Health.

You will achieve a BSc (Hons) Environmental Health degree.

Fees and funding

For employers with a payroll below £3 million: The Government will pay 95% of the cost of the apprenticeship training and assessment for apprentices of any age, for employers who will not be paying the apprenticeship levy. You may also be eligible for extra employer incentives.

For employers with a payroll above £3 million: Since May 2017 employers are able to use their Apprenticeship Levy contributions towards the cost of the apprenticeship using their digital account. We will agree a payment schedule and discuss funding availability before you start your apprenticeships and ensure the cost to your business is clear upfront.

Entry Requirements

Academic Pathway:

For this apprenticeship programme we require applicants to have achieved one of the following admissions conditions

  • A Levels - grades CCC or above
  • BTEC Extended Diploma – grades MMM or above
  • Access to HE Diploma (60 credits) of which a minimum of 45 must be at Level 3 (96 UCAS point equivalence, minimum 45 credits at merit)

We also accept Level 3 qualifications that are equivalent in depth to those listed above for example the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Environmental Health or related subject area, if you are unsure if your previous qualifications are acceptable, please register your interest and we will be able to confirm if you are suitable for this course.

English and Maths:

All Applicants who have not yet achieved GCSE English Language and Maths at Grade 4 or above or an approved equivalent will be required to achieve these qualifications prior to taking the end-point assessment of your apprenticeship. At the University of Wolverhampton, we will enrol you free of charge on Functional Skill English and Maths at Level 2 to ensure you are able to achieve your apprenticeship qualification.
