What happens on the course?

The course is part of the School of Psychology in the Faculty of Education, Health, & Wellbeing.  The School of Psychology is the professional home to over 50 teaching and research staff, bringing a broad range of interests and experience to benefit students learning on our portfolio of courses.  Our School is recognised as one of the leading providers of Psychology education, using innovative teaching methods focusing on the application of scientific and theoretical principles to the study of people’s lives. Psychology staff are grouped into a variety of highly active research clusters through our Centre for Psychological Research, publishing in the latest academic journals and working to make a real-world impact on people’s lives.

Study scientific approaches to understanding the mind, motivation, and behaviour. Modules cover theories, principles, ethics, and application in the real-world. Areas of psychology cover include social, cognitive, health, clinical, & developmental psychologies, as well as the appropriate research methods. 

At the start of your course we support your transition into university by introducing study skills, time management, library skills, independent learning skills, and the core areas of psychological knowledge.

This framework for study of the mind, emotion, motivation and behaviour will be underpinned by historical and scientific background knowledge, with early modules including core debates and key competencies in psychology, research methods and current issues in the field. Our curriculum provides transferable skills while setting the groundwork for later specialist knowledge.

Later in your course you will be able to choose a specialist area to research, learning from the experience of professionals in the field in the production of your research project. Final year modules cover psychology as applied to forensic, clinical, cyber, health, evolutionary psychology, developmental and intellectual disability contexts.

If you choose to study part-time, you complete your course over 6 years and have a range of flexible options for your route through the programme. With our blended learning online content, students are able to manage workloads in the context of other home or work commitments. A pre-study meeting with one of the programme team can help you plan your study route so you can ensure success in your personal circumstances.

This course’s British Psychological Society (BPS) accreditation allows eligibility for Graduate Basis of Chartered Membership (GBC) upon graduation. With this, you may pursue chartered professions in psychology.

Lecturers are experienced in specialised forensic, counselling and clinical psychology fields and a multitude of additional contemporary areas, working in partnership with the nationally recognised Advance HE body to develop teaching and course content quality.

Courses focus on professionalism in service of your career trajectory, integrating placement opportunities in your curriculum for valued experience and learning. Counselling, clinical, educational, forensic and health research placements are offered under the supervision of qualified psychologists.

You will enter a diverse, active and supportive research community and help develop creative solutions to global issues. Student support factors massively into our approach, with expert personal tutors providing individual mentoring throughout your studies. Particular interest will be paid to your research projects, presenting the opportunity to make real-world changes on your own terms.

Our facilities operate at the cutting edge of research and practical application, consisting of computer labs, observation rooms, libraries and laboratories. These are equipped with the latest psychometric tools, state-of-the art hardware, specialist data collection and analysis programmes, and an extensive library of research texts.

 

You will gain knowledge and job-relevant skills as you explore areas such as social psychology, cognitive psychology, personality and individual differences, and developmental and biological psychology. The programme of study will help you to take your first steps along the road to a career focused on human behaviour, whether this is as a psychologist, a mental health practitioner within the healthcare sector, or within a related field such as teaching or business. Psychology graduates are also equipped to perform well in other career paths such as journalism, business management, research, policing, the media and politics.

To this end, a number of transferable skills are developed through teaching and assessment. Your writing will be scrutinised and continuously improved, drawing on critical thinking and communication skills, your ability to solve problems, the quality of your research and your aptitude for collaboration.

Other Requirements
