School pupil gets lots of advice on job prospects

10/11/2017

A school pupil is getting lots of advice from the University of Wolverhampton to build on skills for a future Degree Apprenticeship.

Lottie Rees, 17, attends the High School for Girls in Gloucester and is studying for A Levels in Geography, Psychology and Economics.  After seeing her mom and dad build their own house, she decided she wanted to be a Chartered Surveyor and attended an Open Event at the University of Wolverhampton to explore her options.

Paul Hampton, Head of Architecture and the Built Environment, invited Lottie and her parents to attend the University’s annual ‘Meet the Employer’ event which offers students networking opportunities with local employers to discuss placements, summer internships and graduate positions.

He said: “Our students benefit from great links with employers and industry and every year we stage an event to help students get their foot on the employment ladder – giving them opportunities to meet employers, present their CVs and gain valuable interview experience.

“Lottie has shown great foresight in already pursuing career opportunities even though she is still studying her A Levels so we invited her along to meet with prospective employers and pitch her skills to them in the hope that she can pick up a Degree Apprenticeship.”

Lottie said:  “I got involved with the building of my mom and dad’s house and it really inspired me to look into a career in the industry.  I’m really keen to make contacts early on and this was an ideal event to network with current students as well as some employers so that I can get an idea of what businesses are looking for when they are taking on Apprentices.”

Susan Reznick, Business Development Manager at Bouygues UK, one of the country’s leading construction companies, said:  “These kinds of events are really useful for employers as it gives the students some idea of what to expect when they start to apply for jobs and it helps us to identify emerging talent.  It was great to meet Lottie and very inspiring to see someone so young already proactively looking for career opportunities in the industry and determined to succeed.”

Anyone interested in studying for a Higher or Degree Apprenticeship in Chartered Surveying or Building Construction Management should visit the next Open Day on Saturday 18th November 2017.
