A student's perspective on Holy Week

25/03/2024

In this video, hear from Allan, one of our Christian students, as he reflects on the significance of Holy Week and Easter in the Christian calender.

Allan Makwenbere is a third year Computing and Information Technology student from Zimbabwe, and is the president of the Navigators Christian Society.

Allan said: "Our aim is to strengthen the faith of our members through group Bible study and one to one meetings and, most importantly, help students get to know Jesus Christ."

"I got involved with the society in my first year and it's helped me develop my faith, as well as know how to spend more time with God, and develop my prayer life. It's been very useful in supporting other students who have come into the ministry, seeing how they grow, and developing fellowship with other Christians; and it's also useful seeing the different perspectives of people who are non-Christians."

Holy Week is the week before Easter Sunday, starting with Palm Sunday on 24 March and ends on Saturday 30 March. It is one of the most sacred weeks to those of the Christian faith. Palm Sunday celebrates Jesus's arrival into Jerusalem riding on a donkey, where he was greeted by crowds of people throwing palm branches.  On Maundy Thursday Christians remember the Passover meal which Jesus shared with his disciples, also called the Last Supper. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus, while Easter Sunday celebrates his resurrection.

Allan explains: "Holy Week is perhaps one of the most important events in the Christian calendar. For believers, it's very important to celebrate Good Friday and Easter Sunday, because on Good Friday we remember how much God loves us and how he risked his own son so that he can save us and redeem us from sin, and let us have that better relationship with God."

Allan will commemorate Easter through reflection, Bible reading, prayer and attending church on Easter Sunday. During Holy Week the Navigators will hold a quiz where they will each reflect on what Easter means to each member personally.

"On behalf of Navigators, I wish everyone a happy Easter with good celebration. Hopefully, you can make the most of the time, and if you are not a Christian maybe you can reflect on the significance of the holiday and try to ask questions so that you can understand what Easter is all about."

Allan is currently very much enjoying his experience on a placement with Uniper UK Ltd in Birmingham working as a trading IT undergraduate and, in the future, would love to secure further employment with the company. After graduating Allan is also hoping to continue his study at postgraduate level.
