Screening of 'Women', a powerful documentary short film from Ukraine

WOMEN is a powerful and emotional documentary short film about the impact of the war in Ukraine on the lives of three women.

As part of the ongoing English Café Access and Widening Participation project at the University, we have linked up with a film maker from Ukraine. Many of our English Café learners came to the UK from Ukraine following the outbreak of the war in February 2022. Lora Arkhypenko, the film maker and photographer has directed a film focusing on the lives of three women who were forced to leave Ukraine and who are now living in Shropshire. The film is entitled ‘Women’ and is being screened at the University’s Arena Theatre on Friday 26 April 2024 at 7.30pm.

Film synopsis

WOMEN is a powerful and emotional documentary short film that follows the lives of three courageous women who were forced to leave their home country of Ukraine due to ongoing conflict and war.

Through this film, the director wanted to shed light on the experiences of three incredibly strong and resilient women from Ukraine. They were forced to leave their homes, their families, and their country in search of a safe place for their children. It wasn't an easy decision, but it was one that they had to make for survival.

Through these stories, we will see the struggles they faced in a new country, language barriers, and cultural differences.

But we also see the beauty of women's spirit, as they find the strength to rebuild their lives despite the challenges.

Their stories are not just about the war, but also about hope and resilience.

The duration of the film is 27 minutes and there will then be a Q&A with the Director followed by some refreshments.
