Coach Scholarship

The University of Wolverhampton Sport Scholarship Programme offers performance packages for elite athletes, aspiring coaches, match officials and leaders.

The University of Wolverhampton awards a number of scholarships to aspiring coaches to help improve the quality and quantity of coaching available to students in teams. Working in conjunction with the WLV Sport teams it is an excellent opportunity for students to develop their skills and grow as a coach whilst at University.

The Coaching Scholarship is an opportunity for current students to rise to the challenge of coaching. You will work with senior coaches and mentors, becoming a more effective coach and learning to apply transferable skills coaching gives you in real-world situations. Ideally, candidates will have an NGB Level 1 or 2 or equivalent experience in their chosen sport and be looking to build on this whilst at University. The scholarship is available to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Coach Scholar Packages and Criteria

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Deliver a 2-hour coaching session per week in your chosen sport
  • Support a qualified coach or staff member in delivering coaching, or lead the delivery of a recreational level session only
  • Represent the University & WLV Sport in a positive manner

Skills & Experience Required

  • Either hold or be committed to working towards a Level 1 coaching qualification in your chosen sport
  • Prior experience of delivering your chosen sport on a development or assistant level
  • Weekly commitment to the delivery of sessions and related administration during term time
  • Be willing and able to engage with the programme in its entirety including induction, ongoing training and mentoring meetings

  • Access to a financial award - £200 
  • WLV Gym membership
  • Physiotherapy
  • Workshops
  • Access to coaching CPD

WLV Sport Scholarships are awarded on a case by case basis with priority given to individual’s whose sport features within the British University and Colleges Sport programme, regional or national competition and the potential for elite/international level performance.

To be eligible for a sport scholarship:

  • Be committed to working towards or hold a Level 1/Level 2 coaching qualification in your chosen sport
  • Be enrolled on an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at University of Wolverhampton

The Scholarship Scheme is reviewed annually although the Panel reserves the right to make changes and / or amendments at any time. The Panel also reserves the right to withdraw a Scholarship offer at any time.
