Teacher training
In secondary subjects such maths, and sciences, schools often struggle to find teachers with degrees relevant to the subjects they teach. As few as half of teachers hold a relevant degree in maths or physics, which coincides with them having the greatest recruitment and retention challenges.
To address recruitment challenges, the government has announced pay increases for teachers, with minimum starting salaries of £32,916 (outside of London) for 2025-26. In some schools targeted retention incentives are available in subjects such as chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics and range from £3,000 to £6,000 for the 2025 - 2026 academic year.
