Events and Conferences

This October 6th, we proudly launched JEDI to our staff and student community. The October launch event is aligned with Black History Month in the UK and will be a day to celebrate Black Excellence.

JEDI is a forward-looking community that provides pathways of aspiration and success for University of Wolverhampton students from Black and Global Majority communities*. JEDI utilises workshops, mentoring and networking to create focussed guidance to unlock Black and Global Majority students’ potential. JEDI is about making fair attainment possible, making ambitions visible and providing equity to the communities that need it most.

This event was the first in a series of JEDI events. Students had the opportunity to see and hear people with similar lived experiences at themselves, students can discover that these pathways for success are attainable for people who look like them.

The guest speakers included:

  • Aisha Thomas (Director of Representation Matters)
  • Dari Samuels (Content Editor Radio 1Xtra)
  • Jade Linton (HR Director at Thursfields Solicitors)
  • Rakeem Omar (Channel 4 Journalist and BBC Radio 1 Presenter)

The JEDI launch event was a huge success, for the Business School. We invited Aisha Thomas, Jade Linton, Dari Samuels and Rakeem Omar, and as the launch aligned with Black History Month in the UK the day was a celebration of Black Excellence.

The speakers were absolutely incredible and inspirational. The students loved it and there were some fantastic critical conversations had. Student feedback included comments such as, "we need more events like this", "this event is the first time I felt like I had something at University made for me", and "I felt inspired and motivated by the speakers, I feel more focused and determined to succeed". Our external guests all commented about the authenticity and value of the launch and JEDI itself.

We can't finish this story without giving credit to our amazing catering, you can't beat homemade Jamaican food and Kool-Aid.
