Scoring Experience: My Wolves FC Marketing Placement

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to complete a placement with Wolves Football Club, an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.

I applied for the Marketing placement because of my passion for football and wanted hands-on experience in the sports industry. As a Business and Marketing Management student of this university, it felt like the perfect chance to apply what I’ve learned in class to a real-world setting where project success is highly important.

The two-week placement took place in May within the Marketing and Digital department at Molineux Stadium. I supported projects focused on international fan engagement, helped improve the matchday experience, and contributed ideas to ongoing marketing campaigns. I also gained valuable insight into how a Premier League club operates behind the scenes.

Although not my first placement, it was my first time working with an elite sports organisation. It made me realise how important work placements are in bridging the gap between university and industry which also helped me understand the kind of environment I want to work in long term.

My university modules in customer acquisition, digital business, and marketing planning and research gave me a strong foundation, which helped me contribute meaningfully to the projects. It was rewarding to see theory come to life, especially when working on fan engagement initiatives.

I developed key skills in teamwork, communication, and digital marketing, and built confidence presenting my ideas to professionals.

A highlight was experiencing a matchday from a pitchside perspective as part of the marketing team and working on some exciting projects with an amazing team of mentors who made my transition so easy.

This placement has strengthened my ambition to pursue a career in marketing. Moving forward, I plan to explore more roles in football and the wider sports industry, particularly in fan engagement and digital strategy.
