What to include

A formal research proposal for MPhil/PhD should comprise the following components and has a word limit of 5,000 - 8,000:

  • A provisional research title;
  • A justification of the proposed study with articulated research objectives and research questions;
  • A review of the extant literature in the proposed field with clear identification of knowledge gaps;
  • A debate on the research methodology to be adopted and the rationale;
  • A working timetable for the project with well-defined milestones and possible research activities;
  • A discussion on original contributions that the proposed study is to make to the knowledgebase;
  • A bibliography of sources already consulted or identified as relevant to the study.
