Future Filmmakers shine at the 2025 PHONE FRIGHT AWARDS
The 2025 PHONE FRIGHT AWARDS brought a chilling dose of creativity to the Arena Theatre as young filmmakers aged 16–21 premiered their spine-tingling short films - shot entirely on smartphones.
Hosted by the Screen School in the University of Wolverhampton’s School of Creative Industries, the competition challenged aspiring directors to produce a three-minute horror film using only their phones. From psychological thrillers to uncanny horrors, the finalists proved that imagination and storytelling matter far more than expensive equipment.
Friends, families, and film enthusiasts packed the Arena Theatre for the gala premiere, celebrating the shortlisted filmmakers and their casts. The night was filled with suspense, applause, and the promise of future voices in British cinema.
“It’s a celebration of local talent, storytelling, and the power of horror as a genre that continues to evolve with new generations of filmmakers,” said Russell Prior, Course Leader for BA (Hons) Film Production.
“PHONE FRIGHT gives young creators a professional platform to share their stories, build confidence, and explore what’s possible with accessible technology,” added Neil Hughes, Senior Lecturer in Digital Production Arts and Academic Lead for the British Film Institute’s Rock Up Ready initiative.
The event featured industry guests, horror-themed awards, a fancy dress competition, and concluded with a screening of Shaun of the Dead (2004). Winners were recognised in categories including Best Film, Best Cinematography, Best Production, Best Direction, Best Idea, and Best Fancy Dress.
Looking ahead, the PHONE FRIGHT AWARDS will return on 22 October 2026, expanding its reach with new categories such as Best Cinematic Still, Best Horror Poster, and Best Horror Character Illustration - inspiring schools and colleges across the West Midlands to take part.
