CLASS OF 2025: Wolverhampton leader honoured for advancing equity, inclusion, and STEM education

Arun Bector has been a driving force for equity and inclusion in Wolverhampton for decades. Beginning his journey with Wolverhampton City Council, he quickly identified systemic barriers affecting global majority and minoritised communities. In response, he founded the BME Housing Consortium, a pioneering initiative that collaborates with diverse groups.

More recently, his passion for STEM has inspired innovative, community-based science and technology projects that engage underserved populations, fostering curiosity and learning among those traditionally excluded from STEM education.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to social equity, community empowerment, and inclusive education, Arun has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the University of Wolverhampton.

Arun said, ““It was a real shock, and at the same time an honour, to receive the Fellowship as I’m someone who deliberately avoids self-promotion and self-publicity – I let my work speak for itself.

“At the core of our projects is the idea that we don’t want people to feel lonely or isolated no matter what issue they are experiencing. We want them to get involved in all of our projects, especially the Science projects, learning and doing something new in a fun, practical and exciting way, meeting new people from different backgrounds, communities and cultures – people who they wouldn’t normally come into contact within their everyday lives.

It’s because of our audiences and participants that I’m even here. So, this Honorary Fellowship is as much a recognition of them as it is of me.”

Honorary awards are presented by the University of Wolverhampton to people who have made a significant contribution to their field of expertise.
