University appoints new Vice-Chancellor

The University of Wolverhampton is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Raftery.

Professor Raftery has a Ph.D. in Applied Economics, and his accomplished career includes roles as Dean and Pro Vice-Chancellor at Oxford Brookes University and Vice-Chancellor at London Metropolitan University, where he successfully led a complex turnaround and cultural transformation.

John said: "Universities have the power to transform lives. I am looking forward to meeting the dedicated students and staff at the University of Wolverhampton and working together to build on previous achievements.”

Chair of the University’s Board of Governors, Angela Spence, said: “Professor Raftery’s appointment marks the start of a new chapter for our institution, and we look forward to welcoming him to the University of Wolverhampton.”

Professor Ian Campbell, will step down as the University’s interim Vice-Chancellor on January 31 and John will join the University on February 1.

Ian said: “I feel privileged to have been part of the University of Wolverhampton community and had the opportunity to meet, have conversations and work with so many fantastic people. I wish everybody well and thank all staff for their commitment and dedication throughout my time at the University.” 

Angela added: “I am grateful to Ian for his leadership over the past year, as well as his energy, enthusiasm and passion for the student experience, and the Governors, staff and students all wish him the very best for the future.”
