Students driving the future of motorsport at Autosport International

The University of Wolverhampton’s School of Engineering Race Team (UWR) are gearing up for the Autosport International 2023, the largest car racing show in Europe. Staff and students will be on hand to give advice and guidance to anyone interested in studying engineering at the University’s Telford Innovation Campus – and it’s hoping to drive up interest in its range of courses.

The motorsport event will be held at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, from Thursday 12 until Sunday 15 January 2023, catering for industry professionals, motorsport fans and promoting education.

The UWR team will be displaying their recently rebuilt Praga R1 car, raced by the student team in the Praga Cup in 2022, as well as their IMechE Formula Student car and their Morgan Plus Four, where students give performance feedback directly to the Morgan Motor Company factory in Malvern.

UWR is made up of students undertaking a variety of degrees including Motorsport, Automotive, Aerospace, Manufacturing, Mechanical and Chemical Engineering in the Department of Engineering at the Telford Innovation Campus, based in Priorslee. It is part of the University’s commitment to producing graduates who can apply both theory and practice in the industry, offering them hands-on experience to equip them with real-world skills to boost their employability.

Autosport International offers a unique opportunity for students to explore the motorsport and automotive sectors while studying or exploring options for their next academic step.

The engineering sector plays a key role in the UK’s economy, accounting for 18% of UK employment, and the demand for engineers is higher than ever. In motorsport, this translates to seven of the ten Formula 1 teams being based in the UK, with dozens more national and international teams and championships calling the UK their home.

Attendees can meet industry professionals, listen to thought leaders on a wide range of topics and experience hundreds of exhibits on all aspects of motorsport.

Dr Aman Dhir, Head of the Department of Engineering at the University, said: “In UWR, students get the opportunity to become part of a fully functional racing team while studying for their degree. Our racing team is unique in Higher Education, where our student engineers compete in single-seater racing in the Praga Cup, as well as being a development team for the Morgan Motor Company, where our students have a direct impact on cars that are in road production. We also compete in the IMechE Formula Student competition, and in 2021 won our class in the F3 Cup Championship.

“We’ve exhibited at Autosport International every year since 2015 because the show has fantastic access for students to explore options within the motorsport industry. Over the course of the four days, our cars will be on display at the show. Guests can visit our stand and see how we engineer the car and chat with current students working towards a motorsport-related degree. Some of our alumni have gone on to work for the likes of Mercedes AMG and Williams F1 teams, Bentley, Aston Martin and many others.

“For us, Autosport International is a unique chance to speak to fans, industry professionals and members of the public to raise the profile of our degrees and the opportunities they bring to work in motorsport. For our students, it’s a chance to meet potential employers and build their own networks.”

Ben Whibley, Director of Events, Motorsport Network: “There are few better opportunities for students to get insight from some of the most experienced individuals in the market. At Autosport International, students can register for a trade ticket for Thursday or Friday and network with people within the motorsport and automotive industry. We’re delighted by the wealth of options for young people to get involved in racing and are proud to be supporting the industry at Autosport International 2023.”
