Data science and artificial intelligence explored at collaborative conference

The University of Wolverhampton held a collaborative event recently which was designed to shine the spotlight on Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in a data driven economy.

Academics from the University’s School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences, gathered together with degree and research students and key industry representatives to explore ideas and skills, with emphasis on creating capacities to focus teaching and research, empower industry and connect learners with the latest initiatives in the technology sector.

At the Wolverhampton AI and Data Experience Conference, speakers included Antonio Tombanane from The Edge Hub, one of the top 50 inspiring prominent, influential voices in UK Black Tech, Christine Minetou, Chief Pricing Officer and Data Scientist from QMetric Group Ltd, Dr Aisha Nasseer, Director of Research at Huawei and Colin Page, Solutions Design Consultant at Cognition Foundry.

Themes discussed included Data Science and Entrepreneurship, Skills for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and Ethics and New Applications for Geolocation Data in areas as diverse as retail, security and climate change.

Dr Herb Daly, Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the University, said: “This conference was put together as part of the National Data Skills Pilot, an Office for Students (OfS) programme aimed at determining the best ways to embed essential data skills in different subject areas to enhance career outcomes. The sessions were chosen specifically to connect with industry partners and to explore what special skills and techniques are relevant to different industries. The programme was full of relevant data-oriented topics and students attending from many subject areas of the University. We’re hoping it will be the first of a set of sessions, there were some really useful discussions around internships and lots of ideas being developed about how we can work together in the future.”

Emmanuel Onwe, a Master’s degree Data Science student, said: “I’ve been learning how to use data and this kind of event allows me to connect with industry leaders and hear about the initiatives that are changing the face of AI and Data Science. I'm looking to move into Data Analytics or Data Science so these talks and workshops are really preparing me for my future career.”

Christine Minetou, Chief Pricing Officer at QMetric Group Ltd, said: “Events like these are key so that students can see there is a vast amount of jobs and careers that available in the area of insurance and InsureTech and how much money there is available in the sector. It’s probably not an area that graduates recognise as a fast-growing industry and I’m here to speak about AI and machine learning in industry – why it’s needed and how we’re using it to achieve better socio-economic conditions from a customer and organisational perspective.”

Along with Dr Daly the event was supported by a project team including Jordan Brennan, Abigail Parkes, Emily Rodden & Dr Liam Naughton.
