University picked for digital physical challenge project

10/03/2021

The University of Wolverhampton has been picked to deliver a project aimed at improving the mental and physical health of students from low socio-economic backgrounds.

WLV Sport, in the University’s Institute of Health based at Walsall Campus, has been selected by British University Colleges Sport (BUCS) as one of nineteen universities to deliver the project for students through a series of physical challenges.

The BUCS Active 4 Project provides digital technologies that support both virtual and physical activities aimed at increasing participation for tackling inactivity in female students, using physical activity to tackle mental health issues and increasing the number of students from lower socio-economic backgrounds engaging in sport and physical activity.

The project focuses on challenges and the functionality of the technology offers students the chance to redeem rewards and accumulate points for taking partThe digital technologies will also offer the opportunity for students to link their BUCS Active 4 account with wearable fitness devices (Fitbit, Apple, Strava, and Garmin) meaning that participation is simple.

The project starts from March 2021 and WLV Sport will roll-out various challenges each month for staff and students to access.

Lee Hardwick, Sports Development Officer at the University, said: “This latest phase of funding will really help WLV Sport to provide opportunities for students to remain active in these continuing challenging circumstances.

The use of digital technology to aid participation in the challenges will hopefully appeal to our students and demonstrate how we can extend and improve our future programmes and activities. If the use of this technology proves popular with our students, we will be exploring ways in which we can continue to utilise the platform to enhance this experience further.

To keep up to date with the latest challenges and find out what rewards will be on offer, please ensure you are following @wlv_sport on Twitter and Instagram. You will also be able to access the challenges and find out more information about BUCS Active 4, through the WLV Sport webpages.

Anyone interested in studying in the Institute of Health should register for one of the University’s Virtual Open Days.
